Description
What are Tektites ?
Tektites have fascinated people of the world for centuries. They are small, silicate glassy objects of Earth material formed by the collision of large hypervelocity meteorite with earth rocks. They were rapidly heated and splashed up into our atmosphere, and fallen to Earth again under gravity, cooled down to form tektikes.
Their name comes from the Greek word ‘tektos’, meaning ‘molten’.
They’re normally found in various shades of black, but can also be seen as dark brown and grey (green shades of tektites found in Czech Republic are called Moldavite).
Tektites can be found all over the world, the United States, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, and throughout northwest Africa.
